How Can I Raise My Monitor Height with Books or Boxes?
As mentioned in our ergonomics post, the number one posture mistake you make is looking down at your screen. This hunched position strains the neck and shoulders. The kind of strain that can make your brain go fuzzy.
The solution is simple: elevate your monitor using sturdy household items.
How can I fix my monitor’s height on a Budget?
This step is simple. You know those old textbooks and tombs you bought for school? Maybe even your old hard cover year books? You’ve already collected the knowledge from those books, so lets give them an opportunity to be valuable again.
Those thick, hard cover books are the perfect way to move your monitor up higher. By elevating your monitor, you decrease the need to hunch over. Not only does this help your shoulders, but also relieves pressure on the low back.
I still to this day use books to adjust the height of my screen. Trying to find a little stand for my screen feels unnecessary. I move the screen up to about eye level and good bye slouching.

What Is the Best Homemade Lumbar Support for a Dining Chair?
If you are using a dining room chair or a simple office chair, you are missing lumbar support, which is the single most critical factor for lower back comfort.
What is Lumbar support?
Lumbar support is cushioning or padding that helps the spine stay in it’s natural position. A simple extra to a chair that can make a world of difference.
Lumbar support plays a major role in relieving back pain and keeping you in alignment.
How Do I Create a Lumbar Roll Using a Towel or a Pillow?
A high functioning lumbar support is simple to put together. All you need is a towel of pillow.
- Towel Roll Strategy: Get a regular bath towel and roll it up tightly lengthwise (like a yoga mat). Secure the roll with two rubber bands or hair ties to keep its shape.
- Pillow Strategy: Use a small, firm throw pillow or cushion.
- Placement: Place the roll behind the small of your back, right where your belt or waistline sits. When you sit back, the roll should maintain the natural forward curve of your spine. (This feels like your pelvis is sitting a bit forward)
Supporting your lumbar prevents slouching, this shifts pressure from your spine to the furniture. This small change is the most effective cheap home office upgrade you can make.
My home office setup uses a stool. So my spine must adhere to the natural forward curve or else I’d fall of my chair. A rather simple way to get good ergonomics on a budget.
How can I manage wrist strain when using a computer?
Wrist strain can be a result of two key factors:
- Elbow position
- Wrist position
How to Fix my Elbow Position without Buying a New Chair
Elbow position is all about the relationship of you desk to your shoulders. Your elbows should sit at a perfect 90 degree angle to your keyboard. (At least as close as possible to a perfect 90)
That means you can do Two things:
Change your desk height or change your chair height.
The chair height is often much easier as even budget chairs allow you to move them up or down. If you have a super budget setup, consider sawing off some height on your desk or chair.
What can I do to fix my wrist position on a budget?
Your arms must be positioned to avoid friction and strain.
- The Wrist Rest Hack: Don’t use your desk edge! Use a folded hand towel, a rolled-up sock, or the soft sleeve of an old shirt as a DIY ergonomic setup wrist rest. The goal is to elevate the wrist enough to keep it straight while typing.
Depending on your keyboard height, you are likely bending your wrists backwards. This is an unnatural state for your wrists to be in.
The constant bending of the wrist while typing ends up causing repetitive strain injuries. Fixing this angle is a major defense against physical fatigue. It is a critical cheap home office upgrade.
What Is a Simple, Cheap Home Office Upgrade for Foot Support?
A cheap and simple upgrade to your foot support is proper chair height. Your chair should all your legs and feet to sit at 90 degree angles. Leaving your feet firmly planted on the floor.
Now, you’ve already moved your chair and or desk height to match each other. If you didn’t get the chair height right, then have no fear, you can still fix this.
Chair is too low: Add a cushion to your chair to make you sit up higher.
Chair is too high: Get or make a footrest for your feet to rest on.
Foot support is often overlooked, but it is the foundation of your posture. If your feet aren’t properly grounded, your hips rotate backward, and your lower back takes all the strain.
Research confirms the importance of supporting the lower kinetic chain. Studies on foot orthoses (insoles) show that correcting foot posture can significantly reduce disability and pain levels in patients with chronic low back pain, reinforcing the direct link between foot position and lower back health.
